On March 16, 2011, the National Research Council announced its plans to host a national summit on the problem of weed resistance in several crops, including cotton. In the announcement, David Ervin, an environmental economist at Portland (Ore.) State University, stated that the evidence of weed resistance is "growing every day."
With the exception of isolated cases of common cocklebur (Xanthium strumarium), no resistance build-up has occurred with the weeds that MSMA controls. This important benefit of MSMA should not be ignored by EPA or weed control scientists.
The summit is planned for fall 2011 and will be co-hosted by the Weed Science Society.
